Andersen had a guaranteed contract through the 2021 season that would have paid him in excess of $12 million. "This program is poised for success on and off the field". I have known Gary for many years and respect him highly as a person, my friend, a head football coach and an incredible leader of young men.

Oregon State athletic director Scott Barnes and interim coach Cory Hall spoke at a news conference and answered questions from local media members at the recently renovated Valley Football Center Monday afternoon.

The Beavers are 1-5 this season under Andersen and have gone 7-23 in his tenure, losing their last four games by a combined score of 180-54. It is about teaching and putting young men in a position to succeed on and off the field. He went 19-7 with the Badgers, but parted ways with the program after becoming frustrated with some of Wisconsin's academic admissions policies and standards.

Andersen signed a six-year deal with Oregon State in 2014 worth $2.45 million initially, with his base salary climbing $100,000 every year after his first season.

Oregon State said Andersen, 53, and the school "agreed to release each other from all future contract obligations and payments".

Andersen was the head coach at Utah State from 2009 to 2012, where he compiled a 26-24 record, including an 11-2 season in his final year that propelled him to the Wisconsin job. "When the time comes that you don't want to continue moving forward and that was Gary's stake, we figured that the sooner the better".

"I believe that this is a reset for the football program", Barnes said. Barnes said the search for a new coach would start immediately, using a search firm to identity candidate though Barnes and OSU president Ed Ray will make the ultimate decision. Nothing was open, so he spent time as a head coach in the middle school and high school freshman and JV ranks before he was named interim head coach at Clovis North in March 2011 (replacing the legendary Tim Simons, who resigned because of health reasons). He has college coaching experience at Washington State University, Weber State University and the University of Wisconsin.

Barnes will begin a search for the team's 2018 coach "immediately".
