Delhi Police on Monday said they had launched a probe after a video went viral showing a group of men thrashing an African national who had been tied to a rope in the capital after an alleged robbery attempt.

Police claim that until the videos of the mob assault emerged on Monday, they were unaware of the assault as neither the Nigerian man nor Kumar or anybody else from the locality had mentioned it. "We have registered a case and arrested one person". A Nigerian student was also beaten inside a mall.

The man was allegedly caught by the mob for trying to rob a house in the area, which has a sizeable population of African students.

The four have been identified as Sanjeev alias Montu (26), Kamal Kant alias Chinku (27), Mahavir alias Sonu (27) and Mukesh Kadam (23), all residents of Savitri Nagar in Malviya Nagar, where the incident took place on September 24, police said.

It was only after being beaten up brutally, the man was handed over to the police, and consequently jailed. Local residents, however, claimed he fell down the stairs when he was trying to escape. In the video, he is seen with feet tied to a post, begging for mercy as locals keep hitting him with sticks.

After the brutal assault, the Nigerian, who was wounded and unconscious with injuries to his head, face, limbs and back, was arrested by the police and charged before a court which sent him to jail. The police only came to know what happened when the video surfaced.

South Delhi DCP Ishwar Singh said that the Nigerian national didn't tell that he was beaten up.
