In a fire, you may have just seconds to safely escape your home.

According to the State Fire Marshal's Office, 16 fire-related deaths have occurred this year in South Dakota. "We want people to be prepared".

"Time and again, I've seen the life-saving impact of having a home escape plan, when firefighters arrive at a fire and see the family outside at their meeting place". But how many of us actually take the time to consider what they would do if an emergency situation happened to them. Under no circumstances should you ever go back into a burning building. The presence of smoke detectors can be the single-biggest lifesaver in the event of a fire. "And that's very significant in that you have to plan ahead to get out safely". Practice using different ways out.

^ Close doors behind when leaving - this may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire.

Of course, the other major message of Fire Prevention Week is ensuring that smoke alarms are present and working throughout the home.

As part of the department's prevention efforts, there are several activities planned this week.

This is the 10th year of the parade, which kicks off Fire Prevention Week. Drills will start at 8:30 a.m. and continue throughout the day until approximately 3 p.m.

In support of Fire Prevention Week, the Summit Fire Department encourages Summit residents to develop a plan and practice it.

It is observed on the Sunday through Saturday in which Oct. 9 falls, in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began Oct. 8, 1871, and did most of its damage Oct. 9.

"It's like building muscle memory", Oil City Fire Chief Mark Hicks said about practicing the plan. Partners in the event include WPD, Safe Kids, WESTAR and the Kansas Highway Patrol.

There's no better time for families to practise a fire escape plan than during Fire Prevention Week. It is important that every family member knows two ways out of the house or apartment. A working smoke alarm can buy the few extra moments necessary to save a life. Assign someone to help those who need assistance. Carbon Monoxide detectors are also available.

"If there would be a fire in the next room, it could be completely gutted out", he said.
