Brilliant finish gives rookie Tyler Duncan Safeway lead

Duncan missed out on PGA Tour status via the Web.Com regular season but played his way to the "big time" with a good run through the Web.Com Tour finals and has made a dream start at this higher level despite a golf course which firmed as the afternoon progressed. After a bogey on the second hole, the 47-year-old Mickelson birdied five of his last six holes on the front nine to move to 11 under and within two shots of the lead. Another solid round Sunday could make it a life-changing week for Duncan, and if his putter continues to cooperate, he just might deliver. The native Idyllwilder is scorching the field with his approach shots, so far having gained 7.716 strokes against the field in that category alone.

CHASING: Chesson Hadley, a day after a course-record 61, stays steady thanks to a 70. A win on Sunday would be the second of his career, the first coming at the 2014 Puerto Rico Open.

Snapping at his heels will be Bud Cauley, who rose 12 places into joint third with a six-under round of 66 in which the American did not drop a shot. It's his third appearance in the Safeway Open, and any finish inside the top 50 would be his best.

Defending champion Tyrrell Hatton opened up a five-shot lead heading into the final round of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Emiliano Grillo of Argentina and Graham DeLaert of England are another stroke back at 205 after rounds of 68 and 69, respectively.

Duncan began Saturday with a birdie but fought from there, posting four bogeys against four more birdies to come in at 71. He's 30 under is his past six rounds in the event.

Hoge, beginning his fourth PGA Tour season, had seven birdies. I just took advantage of some opportunities.

Phil Mickelson, seven shots behind Duncan entering the round after consecutive 69s, had 68 to join Bill Haas (69), Tony Finau (71) and Andrew Putnam (69) at 10 under.
