But among these states, BJP only has its hold on Andhra Pradesh where it is in alliance with Chandrababu Naidu's Telegu Desam Party.

The Congress on Thursday said it was ready to face elections any time and claimed that the people of the country were waiting to give a "befitting reply" to the central government. The amendments include provisions to Articles 83, 85, 172, 174 and 356 of the Constitution that pertain to fixing terms of the Lok Sabha and legislative assemblies.

The Congress believes the government is planning to advance the Lok Sabha elections and sync it with several state elections towards the end of 2018.

The ruling BJD and the BJP have already gone into an aggressive campaign against each other keeping an eye on the next polls.

Party's Rajya Sabha member D Raja asserted that the proposal of the union government is "not practical" as it "can't force all state governments to go for polls during Lok Sabha elections". They also said that all the oppositions do not have a consensus on the proposal and till the time all the parties do not give their consent the elections can not be held simultaneously.

"We are the political party which has always supported simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly elections".

He further said that in this bye election, Election commission of India made mandatory to use of EVM and VVPAT. "This is not a democracy", Karat said. But not all Indian states are scheduled to have polls that year.

It issued a formal direction that VVPAT or paper trail machines will be used at polling stations in all future elections where polls are held using EVMs. Only Mizoram will left with assembly election due in December next year.

In a crucial development in poll reforms in India, the Election Commission has shown its willingness to conduct Lok Sabha and Assembly elections simultaneously.

The issue has cropped up again as Wednesday saw Election Commissioner OP Rawat say that the poll watchdog can conduct simultaneous elections after September next year.

The idea is to reduce financial burden and help conduct elections over certain frame of time that doesn't disturb governance at state levels, a view reiterated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
