Other nominees this year who spent some time in Green Bay with the Packers are Jeff Saturday, Seth Joyner, Keith Millard, and Sean Landetta.

Saturday's early story included perseverance; despite being one of the top collegiate centers in the country coming out of North Carolina in 1998, he was not selected in that year's NFL Draft. He started all 16 games in ten of his seasons with Indianapolis. The Steve Smith who had modest career totals of 2,641 yards and 12 touchdowns. Another Vigor alumnus, former Houston Oilers linebacker Robert Brazile, is one of the two players nominated for the Class of 2018 by the Senior Selection Committee.

Mawae was a finalist a year ago and seemingly has gained traction in his bid for induction.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame on Wednesday evening announced 108 former players and coaches as Modern-Era nominees for the Class of 2018. The Selection Committee is made up of a representative for each team (of which I'm the Jaguars representative), two members of the Hall of Fame, the president of the Pro Football Writers Association of America, and nine at-large voters.

The list of nominees will be reduced to 25 semifinalists in November, then to 15 finalists in January.

Beathard was named a Contributor Finalist last month.

That means the player who was nominated was... the other Steve Smith.

A five-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro, Bennett would go to win two AFC Defensive Player of the Year awards and played in five Super Bowls.

That was certainly the case for Terrell Owens, who is one of 10 finalists returning from the 2017 selection process.

A quick poll of fellow selectors indicates only one apparent slam dunk for the Class of 2018, former Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis.

Smith retired from the National Football League just last year, so many fans were surprised to find out that the 38-year-old's name already came up in the list of nominees for the Hall of Fame class of 2018. This is his first year of eligibility. Jacoby has the resume: Three Super Bowl rings, four Pro Bowl selections and member of the NFL's all-decade team of the 1980s.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2018 will be formally enshrined into Canton in August.
