New details emerge about school shooting, suspected gunman

Witnesses say the suspected gunman is sophomore Caleb Sharpe.

Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center and Children's Hospital received three pediatric patients, spokesman Nicole Stewart said.

Armed with a pistol and rifle, classmates say the shooter's face "was passive" in the hallway of a high school in a tiny Washington state town.

Freeman High School is closed today. The suspect is in custody and hasn't been identified by authorities. Michael Harper, who's 15, told The Associated Press that the suspect had always been obsessed with past school shootings.

Knezovick said there were "conflicting stories" but it appeared as though a school employee was able to subdue the gunman until police arrived, calling the response "very courageous".

After the shooting, all of the school's students were evacuated.

"He went to his next weapon", Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich told reporters. At that point he attempted to fire one weapon, it jammed. A student walked up to him, engaged him, and that student was shot.

A Washington State Patrol trooper called Wednesday the "worst day" in his law enforcement career after responding to his "own kids school for [an] active shooter". He added that "All Washingtonians are thinking of the victims and their families, and are grateful for the service of school staff and first responders working to keep our students safe".

- The tragic event occured in a Washington State school. Change the names and place and this could be any number of other school shootings in the past.

State Superintendent Chris Reykdal says he has contacted the district and is offering any help.

This year's budget has put a greater focus on the emotional health and wellness of students.

"He watched a lot of school shooting documentaries", Harper said. I looked up and a girl screamed, 'Help me, help me, help me.' The hall was empty.

We offer our prayers to the family and friends of the Strahan family as well as the entire community of Freeman.

Senator Patty Murray tweeted, "Heartbreaking headlines out of Spokane county".

Pastor Ryan Lingbloom says the parents of the injured students were overwhelmed by the community's support.

This is the second tragedy to fall on the Strahan family in recent months.

Various ambulances and a Lifeflight helicopter were dispatched to a secondary school south of Spokane, Washington, following reports of a shooting. We are keeping them and their community in our thoughts as they cope with this senseless tragedy and begin the hard journey of healing, ” said Coeur dAlene School District spokesman Scott Maben.
