Dolphins place Tannehill on injured list

The Miami Dolphins were dealt a devastating blow to their chances of making the National Football League playoffs for a second straight season last week with quarterback Ryan Tannehill going down with a non-contact knee injury. Miami placed Tannehill on injured reserve Saturday morning as he waits to undergo surgery.

Tannehill hurt his knee in practice last Thursday and did not return. However, the team has the option to get out of the last three years of Tannehill's contract for just $4.6 million if they choose to do so. Their worst fears were realized and a week later he has decided the best course of action is reconstructive surgery sometime this week, a decision he should have made last season instead of stem cell therapy and rehab, but hindsight is 20/20.

Even before he has surgery, Dolphins head coach Adam Gase says Tannehill will be ready for the 2018 season.

Gase added that Tannehill is handling the situation well and is doing whatever he can to assist new Dolphins signal-caller Jay Cutler.

Tannehill initially suffered an injury to the knee in December, partially tearing the ACL. Brandon Doughty and David Fales are further down the Dolphins' quarterback depth chart.

"It was probably tougher for me", Gase said.

Cutler, 34, started 15 games in 2015 with Gase as his offensive coordinator, throwing for 3,659 yards with 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill and starting linebacker Raekwon McMillan will miss the entire year with the same devastating injury.
