Bills trade Sammy Watkins to Rams, land Jordan Matthews from Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles made headlines today by trading Jordan Matthews and a third round pick to the Buffalo Bills for cornerback Ronald Darby. The Bills announced two moves Friday, acquiring the services of Jordan Matthews and E.J. Gaines via trade. Darby, who finished second in defensive rookie of the year voting in 2015, had started 29 games over the past two seasons.

"Sammy has proven he can be a productive player and an explosive receiver in this league, we look forward to having him in a Rams uniform", Rams general manager Les Snead said in a news release. "It goes to the player that we got, the position that we're acquiring and how hard it is to find those guys". With that number nearly certainly rising in 2017, you can expect a bump in pass attempts, which wasn't hard to do to begin with, seeing as the Bills have ranked in the bottom-two for pass attempts in each of the last two years. In his three seasons with the Eagles, Matthews caught 225 passes for 2,673 yards and 19 touchdowns. He had 121 tackles, 32 passes defensed, three tackles for loss, and two interceptions with the Bills. But as they say, football is a business.

There is also a knee injury to consider. He is now dealing with knee tendinitis, which kept him from practicing for a good portion of the spring. Darby is better than most, if not all of the suggested targets.

With Matthews gone, Smith should get an opportunity to be Philadelphia's No. 2, though he'll have to compete with Nelson Algohor, among others. The Eagles are also high on rookie Mack Hollins and second-year player Marcus Johnson.

But Matthews' departure will still leave a void. (Brooks, coming off a ruptured quad tendon, injured his hamstring Thursday in the preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers). "Love you bro. I'll definitely miss doing this with you!"

Before we get into Darby and what he brings to the Eagles, let's talk about what the Eagles are losing in Matthews.
