Actor Who Played the Original Godzilla Dies

Haruo Nakajima - who many Godzilla fans may very well know as the original suit actor in the classic monster movie franchise - has passed away at the age of 88.

Haruo Nakajima, the first actor to portray Godzilla on screen, died Monday. While plenty of other actors have appeared as the monster in subsequent films, as well as the monster being rendered by computer animation, many people believe that Nakajima's was the definitive Godzilla. His energy and zeal are said to be the main reason Nakajima bagged the role of Godzilla and went on to play the monster in 12 movies. "I was so happy". "In the end, the Godzilla I played remains on film forever", he told Great Big Story. Because rubber was in short supply after the war, materials like concrete were used to make the original suit, pushing its weight to 100 kilograms.

In an interview with CBS in 2014, Nakajima said he had once stuck a thermometer inside the suit and it was 140 degrees hot. 'I was sweating all over my face, but I did the best I could'. It spawned three Hollywood remakes, in addition to 29 original Toho films.

A native of Yamagata in Japan's northeast, Nakajima went on to play monsters in other kaiju films, including Honda's Mothra in 1961.

There have been more than 30 Godzilla movies in all, a lot of them Japanese-made. That same year he also starred in Akira Kurosawa's critically acclaimed and highly influential Seven Samurai. The last Hollywood outing was in 2014, with a sequel now in works.
