U.S. News & World Report has published national hospital rankings each year for almost three decades.

The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, was ranked the best.

For the 2017-18 rankings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 medical centers and hospitals nationwide in 25 specialties, procedures and conditions.

In 2016, U.S. News also gave four UIHC specialties "high-performing" marks - awarded to programs that did not rank in the top 50 but scored high enough to put them in the top 10 percent.

Mass General Hospital was ranked fourth on the list with a point total of 358.

No other Northeast Florida hospital is listed in the rankings.

Northwestern was ranked nationally in 13 adult specialties and rated "high performing" in each of the nine adult procedurs and conditions.

This is the sixth year in a row UW Hospital and Clinics has been named the state's top hospital.

U.S. News is just one of many organizations producing reports meant to hold health care organizations accountable and help consumers make wise choices. In rankings by state and metro area, U.S. News recognized hospitals as high performing across multiple areas of care. "It is rewarding for our physicians, nurses and support staff, who every day work together with skill and passion to provide the best care for children and adolescents with the most complex medical conditions".

Shawnee resident Wendy Ann Noon Berner alleged she only learned of the misdiagnosis when a former pathology chief at KU Hospital, Lowell Tilzer, filed a whistleblower lawsuit against the hospital previous year.

U.S. News asserts its rankings are based on objective information, including survival and readmission rates, patient experience, volume, patient safety and quality of nursing.

Nationally ranked specialties are: cancer (18th nationally); cardiology and heart surgery (39th); gastroenterology and GI surgery (7th); geriatrics (26th); neurology and neurosurgery (34th); ear, nose and throat (50th); and pulmonology (17th).

Aspirus Wausau Hospital in Wausau was ranked No.4 in the state; St. Mary's Hospital in Madison was ranked No. 5; and Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center tied for No. 6 with Aurora Medical Center in Grafton. This is the seventh time KU hospital's geriatrics care have made the list.

The hospital has also recently been responsible for developing an antibiotic-releasing polymer which may simplify the treatment of prosthetic joint infection, according to a recent press release.
