Former Phillies catcher Darren Daulton, 55, dies of brain cancer

He announced he was cancer free in 2015, but the disease returned.

Two Toronto players - one of them was closer Duane Ward, the primary reason the Blue Jays had just won their second straight World Series - had come to the visiting clubhouse to congratulate the Phillies for putting up such a dogged fight before falling in six games.

"The culture of the Phillies at that time had to change and Darren led the charge for us, becoming a championship caliber team, and while doing so he not only became a leader and a friend, we became brothers", John Kruk said via a Phillies team statement.

"Dutch, as we called him, was a warrior and a leader", Dykstra, fighting back tears, said in the video.

He is also survived by four children, Summer Daulton, Savannah Daulton, Zachary Daulton, and Darren Daulton II. I loved him like he was one of my own. He was traded to the Florida Marlins in July 1997, and finished his career off with a World Series ring that October.

The left-handed-hitting Mr. Daulton batted.245 with 137 homers and 588 RBIs in 1,161 games.

He won the Silver Slugger Award in 1992, and was named to the All-Star team in '92, '93 and '95.

Daulton, born on January 3, 1962, attended Arkansas City (Kansas) High School. He was drafted by the Phillies in 1980 and made his debut with the team three years later after playing for the AA Reading Phillies.

While Dykstra was incarcerated, he received a letter that Daulton had written to the judge on Dykstra's behalf.

Cooney adds, Daulton was a leader that proved to be a bright spot in Phillies history that was surrounded by losing teams.

"He was the best team leader that I've ever seen in a baseball clubhouse, and one of the nicest men I've ever met". Darren was a super human being. It captivated me, beginning a long love affair with baseball, and sports in general. I have become very good friends with him and his family. It helped that the first Mrs. Daulton - Lynne Austin - was a Playboy Playmate and the original Hooters model, but the well-tanned catcher from Arkansas City, Kan., contributed his share to the kid's blessed gene pool.

Daulton spent his 14 seasons as the Phillies' catcher.

"Darren Daulton the ballplayer was and always will be synonymous with great leadership and winning".

"We were all aware of what he was going through", said Wade, who is working in the Phillies' front office as a special assistant in baseball operations.
