Blanchett is yet to sign on the dotted line, but the USA trade publication The Hollywood Reporter says the 48-year-old Melbourne-born actress is close.

She was married to actor Desi Arnaz from 1940 to 1960. A resident of Jamestown, New York, her legacy was the inspiration for the Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Center comedy museum and the Lucille Ball Comedy Festival, both of which take place in her hometown.

The couple's children, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr., will produce the film along with Escape Artists.

Blanchett, meanwhile, has been nominated for six acting awards by the Academy, taking home the Oscar for best performance in 2004's "The Aviator" and 2013's "Blue Jasmine".

Still, Lucy and Desi starred in on one of the most successful sitcoms of all time and their production company, Desilu Productions, is responsible for the original "Star Trek" series and the "Mission: Impossible" TV show. The script was written by West Wing creator Aaaron Sorkin, who's also written acclaimed films like The Social Network and Moneyball. She has also famously played the role of mystical elf-queen Lady Galadriel in Peter Jackson's film adaptations of J.

There are discussions underway as to who will portray the important role of Arnaz, with Deadline adding Javier Bardem's name into the mix as a potential candidate.
