Garnett started 11 games during his rookie season and was projected to be the team's starting left guard in 2017. Don't know for sure.

The former Super Bowl MVP signed a five-year contract worth $26.5 million in March after spending 2016 with the Oakland Raiders. Williams broke into the National Football League as an undrafted rookie in 2014 after a minicamp tryout with the Cleveland Browns, sparking his connection to Kyle Shanahan and now-49ers secondary coach Jeff Hafley. He rejoined new coordinator Robert Saleh, who was an assistant on the Seahawks' title team.

The injury to Smith means the 49ers will likely have to put rookie Reuben Foster on the field a little bit earlier than planned. Foster, 23, fell to the 31st selection in the National Football League draft after he was widely expected to be a top-10 pick.

Foster, a first-round draft pick this year, has been one of the 49ers' standouts throughout training camp.

According to Kevin Jones of KNBR, Garnett's leg was wrapped and he walked gingerly, suggesting he could be forced to miss some time. He ascended to working with the second string this week during team drills after being limited in the offseason program while recovering from shoulder surgery. Smith figured to be the starting weakside linebacker in the 49ers' new 4-3 defense.

The San Francisco 49ers have been relatively lucky on the injury front this training camp.

"Neither one of them are good news", Shanahan said. "I think at linebacker you have to smart, patient, know when you can shoot your gun and go make those plays".

Garnett has primarily played at left guard with the first-team unit during training camp.
