FA Community Shield 4-1: Arsenal Beat Chelsea On Penalties

The Gunners snared the first silverware of the season by beating the Premier League champions on penalties at Wembley to follow May's FA Cup final triumph over their London rivals.

Cahill, scored for Chelsea to open the shootout, which was based on the ABBA format used in tennis tie-breaks.

That gave Arsenal the initiative and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored before Olivier Giroud netted the decisive penalty.

Moses was sent off against Arsenal in the FA Cup final back in May.

It had been an even contest.

And for the second time in four months, Arsenal defeated Chelsea at Wembley as Sead Kolasinac's late strike cancelled out Victor Moses' opening goal before they ran out comfortable winners in the shootout. Both benefited from defensive lapses.

And they then found themselves a man up as Pedro received a deserved red card for a "studs-up" challenge on Mohamed Elneny.

Arsenal's record signing Alexandre Lacazette was handed a starting berth by manager Arsene Wenger for today's Community Shield showdown with Chelsea at Wembley.

Manchester United were the triumphant team then and now Jose Mourinho's side and Pep Guardiola's Manchester City are seeking to succeed Chelsea as English champions. "We have players pumped up in the gym and players who are born strong". Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and the new mega signing Alvaro Morata failed to convert their penalties while Arsenal players were spot on with their kicks.

"We want to find a good balance between the confidence we can get out of these games and the urgency that every Premier League game demands", the Arsenal boss said.

Arsenal were definitely missing their bug guns including Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez while Chelsea also had their share of absentees; biggest being Eden Hazard.

Diego Costa, for three campaigns Arsenal's tormentor-in-chief in this fixture, remains in exile.
