"The Illinois Department of Public Health reports that, in 2016, there were total of 155 human cases of West Nile Virus in Illinois, and six disease-related deaths", the release stated.

Precautions include using insect repellent; wearing light-colored, long-sleeved shirts and long trousers when outdoors; avoiding being outdoors at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active; ensuring window and door screens are in place and in good fix; and removing standing water that can provide breeding grounds for mosquitoes. The presence of West Nile virus in Greene County is being confirmed.

Remove standing water from buckets, unused kiddy pools, old tires or similar sites where mosquitoes commonly lay eggs.

Most people bitten by infected mosquitoes may experience mild flu-like symptoms or no symptoms at all.

Cover up exposed skin when outdoors and apply DEET or other EPA-approved insect repellent to exposed skin and clothing.

Reduce standing water on your property; check and drain toys, trays or pots outdoors that may hold water. Swimming pools should be cleaned and chlorinated when not in use.

To gear up in the fight against Culex tarsalis, apply insect repellent and wear light-coloured, loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and trousers. Be sure to follow all directions on product labels.

Use nets and/or fans over outdoor eating areas.
