Gas Prices On The Rise

"As summer moves forward, the days of falling gas prices appear to be behind us for now", Mary Maguire of AAA said.

AAA officials say by the end of August, prices could surpass the current national high of $2.72 a gallon.

The national average price for regular unleaded was $2.31, AAA reported.

Average retail gasoline prices in IL rose 7.5 cents a gallon in the past week, averaging $2.29 on Monday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 4,378 gas outlets in IL. Ohio's prices rose 10.8 cents per gallon since last week.

AAA is warning drivers not to get too comfortable with the virtually flat changes seen in Georgia gas prices over the last week, though. Gas prices should rise 5-10 cents this week, but remain below this year's highs, set earlier this year. Tighter supplies and growing demand have put pressure on gas prices, leading to increases throughout the region.

Gasoline prices in MA have shot up 3 cents for the second straight week as slumping gas prices appear to be over. The cheapest was $2.24 in Pensacola.

Gaoline gas prices are following, which is near $50 a barrel as fuel demand peaks during the busy driving season, said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy.

The upward climb in gas prices nationally is being blamed on political uncertainty in Venezuela, which is a major supplier to the U.S.

Events in Venezuela, where anti-government protests follow the most recent elections, will play a big role in where prices go from here, according to DeHaan.
