White Sox acquired LHP Andre Davis and RHP A.J. Puckett from the Royals in exchange for OF Melky Cabrera and cash considerations.

He called the trade "a sad moment for me", and spoke of the bond he had formed with several White Sox teammates. "And he'll be missed". He's also tied for the Major League lead with nine outfield assists this year, while he's tops in the Majors with 21 assists since the start of 2016.

Cabrera, who had a previous stint in Kansas City in 2011, has 13 home runs, 56 RBIs and an OPS of.772 this season. Since he'll be a free agent at the end of the year, Cabrera offered little long-term value to a team undergoing a full-scale rebuild.

With the San Francisco Giants, Cabrera was the Most Valuable Player at the 2012 All-Star Game in Kauffman Stadium, then later that year was part of the World Series championship team.

The Royals are giving up Puckett, a 22-year old Single-A (Wilmington) pitcher.

The Royals are second in the AL Central, three games back of Cleveland, and they hold a 2.5 game edge over the Rays for the final Wild Card spot. Davis, 23, has posted a 4.83 ERA in Low-A this season but has struck out over a batter per inning.
