It can be noted that net neutrality is a very touchy subject when it comes to telecom services worldwide and had snowballed into a major controversy in the country previous year.

Last month, Reliance Jio launched a single SIM, 4G-enabled feature phone -Jio Phone - targeting to capture a bigger pie of the 50 crore feature phone users' market.

The success of Reliance Jio's thunderous entry into the Indian telecom market has not only surprised experts but has also catapulted Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) Chairman Mukesh Ambani to second spot on Asia's rich list.

Meanwhile, Jio has launched a new recharge plan at Rs 349, which includes 20 GB of 4G data with a validity of 56 days without any daily limit.

As per Himanshu, Jio's handsets with free voice calls will appeal to those customers, who are heavy users of voice.

"Incumbents are expected to face huge challenges in retaining their high ARPU (average revenue per user) feature phone user base and acquiring new customers as well, considering JioPhone launch", IDC India's senior analyst Navkendar Singh said.

This new handset will give all the choices to a customer, including to choose the operator of his/her choice, popular applications like Google, Facebook or Whatsapp, Kapania stressed.

"Reliance Jio is going to bring in five crore JioPhones to India which it plans to sell in three months". The tradition of telecom operators working with handset makers started with Reliance Infocomm back in 2003. The company is working up on the features, OS, and display that can be bought down in the smartphone.

The Jio Phone will be made available starting August 15 in a beta programme, but units will be available in limited quantities.

A person familiar with the matter said that Vodafone and Bharti Airtel are driving discussions with handset vendors for bundling voice and data services with 4G VoLTE feature phones ahead of the availability of JioPhone.

As we all have witnessed the launch of Jio Phone by the Mukesh Ambani, the owner of Jio Telecom, whose effective price is Rs 0, but for a security deposit, a user has to pay Rs 1,500 (completely refundable) while registering for the device. Interested customers who pre-book will be able to buy the phone from September 2017, on a first come first serve basis.
