India marks Kargil Vijay Diwas today: All you need to know

On 26 July 1999, India successfully took command of the high outposts in Kargil which had been lost to Pakistani intruders.

But why was this war fought in the first place?

Earlier, Union Defence Minister Arun Jaitley and the three Chiefs of Services laid floral wreaths at Amar Jawan Jyoti, here in the national capital to mark the occasion. In a tweet, Mr. Modi said, Kargil Vijay Diwas reminds us of India's military prowess and the great sacrifices our armed forces make while steadfastly keeping India safe.

July 26th, 1999, 17 years ago on this date, the Indian Army showed extraordinary mettle and recaptured all the posts infiltrated and occupied by Pak Army. He was speaking at the 18th Kargil Vijay Diwas celebration in Lucknow. A group of celebrities including Abhishek Bachchan, Juhi Chawla and Raveena Tandon, on Wednesday paid tributes to Indian soldiers and martyrs on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas.

Rao told ANI, "A battalion of 120 men of the Indian Army were surrounded by the Chinese Army during the 1962 war and out of those who sacrificed their lives, 114 soldiers were from the South Haryana districts of Gurgaon, Rewari and Mahendragarh".

India won the war and it is celebrated as Kargil Vijay Diwas every year on July 26.
