IDC also estimates that the total PC shipments for the quarter stood at 60.5 million units, a drop of 3.3%.

Rising component prices are being blamed for the declining sales figures, with an inflated market dampening enthusiasm from buyers and consumers alike. However, Apple's PC market share went up despite the decline in sales.

"Becoming number one in market share was not an explicit objective", Ron Coughlin, president of HP's global personal systems business told The Wall Street Journal.

Both market trackers ranked HP as the top computer seller, saying the company's sales had grown despite the shrinking market.

Among the top six PC vendors, only HP and third-placed Dell achieved growth in the overall number of shipments when compared to the corresponding period in 2016. Shipment volume during the three months ended June 30 was the lowest quarter since 2007. Gartner said Lenovo shipments shrank 8.4 percent with declines in all key regions. In 2016, Chromebooks grew 38%, far outpacing the 6% shrinkage of the overall PC market, it says.

However, while Apple only dipped slightly in the worldwide picture (by 0.4%), Tim Cook's firm dropped majorly over in the U.S. with a 9.6% decline in shipment numbers year-on-year. PC shipments increased in Germany as businesses invest in Windows 10 based new hardware, and the Russian market continued to show improvement driven by economic stabilization. Apple places fourth, capturing 11.8 percent of the United States market, down from 12.3 percent year-over-year.

U.S. firm Dell was the only other vendor to increase its shipments, with an estimated 1.4 per cent growth.

The PC market has faced pressure in recent years as consumers have generally shifted money to smartphones and tablets, and away from desktop computers.

Gartner notes that the Chromebook market has been growing more rapidly than the overall PC market.

Acer suffered the biggest drop of any company in the Gartner study, with a 12.5 percent year-over-year decline.

Meanwhile, Gartner's data indicates that Chromebooks are faring better. Final statistics will be available soon to clients of Gartner's PC Quarterly Statistics Worldwide by Region program. While IDC said that HP's PC shipments rose 6.2 percent year-over-year to 13.8 million, Gartner said HP's shipments grew 3.3 percent to 12.7 million. The former two gadgets have now so much evolved that they offer all the functionalities of PCs, along with convenience of use and mobility only they can offer.
