A police official said the operation was halted for the night but the Armed forces cordoned off the area to prevent terrorists from escaping.

Kashmiri youth claiming to be followers of "deposed" Hizbul Mujahideen chief Zakir Musa told people on Wednesday that they stood for the Islamic State terror outfit and forbade them from draping the bodies of three terrorists killed in encounters in Pakistani flags.

The joint operation was launched at around 6:00 pm on Tuesday and at about 8.30 pm contact was established with terrorists. The holed-up militants were given an opportunity to surrender.

"They were killed outside the house after they came out and tried to break the cordon", he said. The search operation turned into an encounter as the search party of the security forces was sacked upon by the militants. Earlier, it was believed that there were two militants who had taken shelter in the area.

He said an AK-56 assault rifle, an SLR, a pistol and seven magazines were recovered from the shootout site. "Two security personnel were also injured during the encounter who were shifted to hospital for treatment", the spokesman said. They have been hospitalized.

The slain militants were identified as Javed Sheikh, Dawood and Aquib. According to a senior police official, Sheikh was the Hizbul district commander. The cops retaliated by firing tear gas shells and pellets.

With heavy security arrangements by the Army and other government forces in Kashmir, the Lashkar-e-Taiba had activated its over-ground workers (OGWs) to find easy targets for its terrorists.

Hundreds of people attended the funeral prayers of the slain militants amidst pro-freedom and anti-India slogans.

Son of a teacher, Wali Mohammad Shiekh, Javid was a graduate and married. The clashes continued for some time.
