Late on Saturday, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared Ahmedabad as India's first world heritage city.

He held a high level meeting with several departments of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and senior secretaries of the government in order to guide them for organizing this festival.Rupani also announced to organize a Heritage Walk in all the six zones of the AMC by appealing to people from each and every religion to join the walk which will uplift the unity of the "Heritage City".

"The journey began in 2010 when Prime Minister Modi proffered the dossier of Ahmedabad to UNESCO", she said. The countries also recognized that the city was a cradle for India's non-violent freedom struggle led by Mahatma Gandhi.

The countries unanimously supported Ahmedabad citing a secular co-existence of Islamic, Hindu and Jain communities along with exemplary architecture of intricately carved wooden havelis dating back hundreds of years.

Today, the old walled quarter is located within the greater city of Ahmedabad, an industrial metropolis of over five million.

Ahmedabad became even more famous for its association with Mahatma Gandhi who lived here from 1915 to 1930.


The historic city of Ahmedabad was founded in 1411.

It is constituted out of residential settlements "Pol" and has a specific scale of its community based settlement grouping.

In 1984, the first study for conserving heritage structures was carried out. Out of total 287 world heritage cities across the globe, there were only two cities in the Indian subcontinent - Bhaktpur in Nepal and Galle in Sri Lanka.
