An army man was killed and another critically in Pakistani troops firing and shelling along Line of Control (LoC) in Nowshera sector of Rajouri district on Friday.

The Indian Army retaliated strongly and effectively, and in the exchange of fire, Bakhtawar Singh was grievously injured and succumbed to his injuries while being evacuated to the military hospital, he said.

India and Pakistan traded mortar shells, heavy automatics and small arms fire in Nowshera sector on Thursday afternoon as later troops continued targeting forward Indian positions and civilian areas without any provocation at frequent intervals in border Rajouri and Poonch districts for the past many days.

"Naik Bakhtawar Singh was a fearless and honest soldier".

The slain soldier was identified as 34-year-old Naik Bakhtawar Singh of Village Hajipur, Punjab. He loved his job to the core.

On Wednesday, defence sources had said two Pakistani soldiers were killed in Indian army firing along LoC opposite to Bhimbher Gali sector of Poonch district.

There have been 11 ceasefire violations in the last five days and total 15 along the LoC and the global border in Jammu region since January 1 in which one civilian was killed and seven others were injured.

An increase in the cease-fire violations on LoC was recorded since beginning of last month and several civilian killings were reported on both sides of LoC.
