Trump Appears to Confirm He Is Under Investigation

Rosenstein is the government lawyer responsible for overseeing the investigation into the Trump campaign's alleged collusion with Russian Federation during the 2016 presidential election, with Attorney General Jeff Sessions having recused himself from the probe. Rosenstein was also the person who appointed Robert Mueller as a special counsel to head the Russian Federation investigation after Comey was sacked.

The probe by special counsel Robert Mueller, a former FBI chief, "marks a major turning point in the almost year-old FBI investigation, which until recently focused on Russian meddling during the presidential campaign and on whether there was any coordination between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin", The Washington Post had reported.

"It certainly sounds like the president is adding Rod Rosenstein to the enemy's list along with Bob Mueller and James Comey and an ever increasing number of people", Sen.

Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein, a Senate Intelligence Committee member, said she was "increasingly concerned" Trump would try to fire not only Mueller, but also Rosenstein.

Rosenstein, in office for less than two months, is the top Justice official overseeing the probe because Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself. But Rosenstein, too, may ultimately have to hand off oversight of the probe given his own role in Comey's firing.

Although Rosenstein appointed a special counsel to lead the federal probe, he still makes the final decisions about resources, personnel and - if necessary - any prosecutions.

Trump's Friday morning tweet capped off 24 hours of comments on Twitter about the investigation, including several remarks about his opponent in the 2016 election. "Sad!" Trump said in his first tweet of the day.

Trump also attacked the media Friday morning.

Mr Pence's office confirmed he had retained Richard Cullen, a former Virginia attorney general and USA attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, to assist "in responding to inquiries" from Mr Mueller.

The White House has directed questions to outside legal counsel, which has not responded.

A Trump's transition official confirmed the lawyer's internal order, which was sent on Thursday. He subsequently appointed Mueller as special counsel for the investigation into Russian efforts to interfere in the 2016 election.

The requested records include a host of electronic communications and documents including "emails, voicemails, text messages, audio recordings, videos, photographs or images, calendar records and diary data", and asks that aides "immediately suspend any deletion, modification, overwriting, or other possible destruction of the information described above".

The latest social media outburst by the president on his personal Twitter account came after a Washington Post report that Mueller is looking into the financial transactions of Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who is a senior adviser to the president. "I can go around them", Trump said. "Regulations way down, jobs and enthusiasm way up!"
