Her entire family did not attend the ceremony, but her husband David Beckham did cheer her on. The Spice Girl turned fashion designer, who celebrated her 43rd birthday on Monday, received the award for her contribution to fashion after nearly 17 years in the business and more than 13 years after former England captain David Beckham was granted the same title for his services to football.

The Duke of Cambridge congratulated personally Mrs Beckham for her work not only as the humanitarian but the fashion guru.

We've always called Victoria Beckham fashion royalty (she's built herself an empire!), but now that title is (practically) official!

After a 17-year career in the fashion industry, Victoria Beckham is being honoured for her contributions by the Queen. In a statement, Beckham said she was "proud to be British".

The 41-year-old football star was made an OBE in 2003 but is said to have called the honours committee "unappreciative" in a four-letter rant in a 2013 email for failing to make him a Sir.

The designer wore a dark navy ankle-length sheath dress and maroon suede heels for the ceremony and pulled her brown hair into a loose chignon at the nape of her neck. I'm so happy to share this very special occasion with my parents and husband.

"She is especially thrilled that her philanthropic work as a UNAIDS goodwill ambassador, creating a voice and awareness for women with HIV that suffer prejudice and discrimination has been recognised in this way", the source continued.

Oscar and Tony-winning actor Mark Rylance, 57, was knighted.
