Harper's two home runs lifts Nats over Phils

The 6-4 Nats win drops the Phillies to 1-5 against the division front-runners this year.

Daniel Murphy #20 of the Washington Nationals game winning double in the tenth inning scores Bryce Harper #34 (not pictured) during a baseball game against the Philadelphia Phillies at Nationals Park on April 14, 2017 in Washington, D.C. The Nationals won 3-2 in ten innings. Murphy is hitting at a robust.408 batting clip, while Harper sits at.300 with two homers so far.

It was his bunt single to lead off the fourth inning that short-circuited any or all premature thoughts of a ideal game for Washington Nationals pitcher Tanner Roark.

One of Strasburg's two starts came against the Phillies although he didn't receive a decision in a 4-3 loss on Sunday. Daniel Nava also had a hit in the inning and Tommy Joseph singled home the tying run with two outs. He also had perhaps two of the worst at-bats you will see in key spots in the eighth and ninth innings.

Aaron Altherr doubled to lead off the ninth and scored on a fielder's choice to break a tie and give the Phillies a 4-3 lead. After retiring the opposing pitcher, Jerad Eickhoff, Gonzalez walked Hernandez, but was then bailed out by Hernandez getting caught stealing on a ideal throw from Matt Wieters. He gave up a two-run to shot to Bryce Harper (who else?).

ROCKIES 4, GIANTS 3: Antonio Senzatela settled down after a rough first inning, holding San Francisco scoreless on four hits over the next six innings to win his second straight start as Colorado won on the road. The left-hander allowed two runs, five hits and two walks and struck out two.

He hit a home run that was huge; he gave us that two-run lead.

That means Mackanin's early task will be to make sure that the Phillies aren't so deep in the standings by Memorial Day that the season becomes irrelevant, the players lose their passion and the front office begins to leak patience. That's when Joaquin Benoit presented Harper with a full-count sinker that caught a bit too much of the plate. Harper hit a three-run walkout home run.

Run support is still a problem for Eickhoff. The team has just one save in the first 10 games and a 5.11 team ERA.

Scherzer (1-1) allowed three runs, four hits and two walks in six innings.

Gonzalez made it through the first seven innings unscathed other than the lead-off homer, but then all heck broke loose in the top of the eighth. The Phillies continue to get consistent production from their offense, as Philly produced four runs in Saturday's victory and has scored four or more runs in seven of its last nine games.

YANKEES 9, CARDINALS 3 Greg Bird busted out of his slump with a long home run, and Michael Pineda pitched NY past staggering St. Louis for its seventh consecutive victory. On Saturday, the Phillies will have to contend with a familiar face in Roark, who is 5-5 with a 3.59 ERA in 12 games, including 10 starts, in his career against the Phillies. Ruf was 11 for 31 with three home runs, three doubles and eight walks off Gonzalez, tormenting him while in a Phillies uniform.

At the plate Hernandez had three hits.

Ryan Braun hit a go-ahead, two-run homer, and Eric Thames added a solo shot for his fifth home run of the series as Milwaukee won for the fifth time in in six games.

The Cubs have blown a save opportunity in three consecutive games for the first time since May 2000 against the Brewers.

MIAMI - Pinch hitter J.T. Riddle hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to lead Miami over NY.

Health check Left fielder Howie Kendrick was out of the starting lineup because of soreness near his ribs. It took one disastrous outing by starter-turned-reliever Adam Morgan for him to get shipped back to Triple-A, the left-handed arms collection getting cut in half with that one transaction.

Up next The Phillies are off on Monday.

The Phillies just can't seem to find their way against the Mets.

The Phils named Zach Eflin as their starting pitcher for Tuesday night's game.

Eflin could only be recalled to replace Buchholz since it is less than 10 days since he was optioned out to the IronPigs.
