Texans Have Interest in Patriots CB Butler

Ultimately, the Saints didn't shop Cooks; teams contacted the Saints, and the Saints made a decision to pursue the possibility.

The 27-year-old was scheduled to meet with the team on Thursday.

ProFootballTalk reports the deal the Saints turned down from the Eagles would have sent safety Malcolm Jenkins as well as third and fourth-round picks to New Orleans.

CBS Sports reported Butler's agent has been contacting other teams in search of one that would give up a first-round pick to sign Butler.

Now, following his trade from New Orleans to New England last week, those prospects could reach a new level as he prepares to catch passes from another surefire Hall of Famer, quarterback Tom Brady.

The wide receiver's name was mentioned in various trade rumors before he ultimately was dealt to the Patriots last Friday, but he said those didn't stem from any animosity between him and the Saints.

If the Patriots have to wait until pick No. 72 to make their first selection, it will be their longest wait since last season when they didn't have a first-rounder (that whole DeflateGate thing) and took cornerback Cyrus Jones with the 60th overall pick. In 2016, he had 63 tackles, four interceptions, 17 passes defensed, one forced fumble and one sack.

New England has placed a first round tender on Butler and would be due a first round pick if another team signs him to an offer sheet and the Patriots decline to match. They also don't have a second-round pick after trading for Carolina defensive end Kony Ealy, though they only moved back eight spots in acquiring Carolina's third-round pick in the deal.

"That's why it was very important to find a home like I found, because Drew Brees is the type of guy that can extend your career, man, and that's what it's all about. I love everything about the organization and the people". And I already knew that I was gonna be able to come down and be a factor for 'em.

"No bad blood", Cooks said of his time in New Orleans. I don't have to be the superstar.

"I think a lot of that and what was going on got taken out of context and a little exaggerated", he said. The Saints are still the favorites to land Butler.

Alex Okafor is a great pick-up for the New Orleans Saints in the second week of National Football League free agency, but there is still more work to be done.
