There had been rumours that singer Lady Gaga would portray Donatella Versace in the third season of the anthology series, which will star The Girl on the Train's Édgar Ramirez as Gianni Versace and former Glee actor Darren Criss as Cunanan. American Crime Story season 3 has announced its latest casting news, and once again, we're getting a rather big name! Over the years, he's been able to lure top tier thespian talent to his television shows-from Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, and Angela Bassett in the American Horror Story franchises, to Julia Roberts in The Normal Heart, Susan Sarandon (with Lange) and Catherine-Zeta Jones in Feud, and just recently, the peerless Annette Bening for Katrina: American Crime Story.
The Oscar victor is set to topline FX's Ryan Murphy anthology Versace: American Crime Story, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Its second and fourth seasons will focus respectively on the fallout from Hurricane Katrina and the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky affair.
Versace, from Fox 21 and FX Prods., is based on the book Vulgar Favors by Vanity Fair writer Maureen Orth. Her credits include "Volver", "Broken Embraces", "Nine", "To Rome With Love", "The Counselor" and "Vicky Cristina Barcelona", for which she won the supporting actress Oscar. Cunanan, who committed suicide a week later, was responsible for at least five other murders in the months leading up to the Versace's murder. However, the director denied these reports back in January. It will begin filming in April and will air sometime in 2018.
