Met Police were called to the flat in Hackney last night and discovered two children, aged 1, injured at the property Wilberforce Road.

A police auto was parked outside the white three-storey building where the children are believed to have been injured.

Earlier, police confirmed that the one-year-old boy was pronounced dead at an east London hospital just before 1:00am Sunday morning, while the one-year-old girl remains in critical condition.

Both were taken to hospital, where the boy died, and the girl remains seriously injured. "The man has not been seen since this time", the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

Murder squad detectives had been hunting for Bidhya Sagar Das in the aftermath of the incident.

No arrests have been made thus far and no cause of death has been given, although a neighbour to the residence told the BBC that a woman came downstairs screaming, prompting another neighbour to dial 999.

Neighbours called for emergency services and a police helicopter was dispatched to try and find the suspected attacker. I do not know what she was shouting. Formal identification awaits and a post-mortem examination will be scheduled in due course.

"She kept on shouting".

Mihai Manea, 29, who lives on the second floor of the building, said the children were twins and lived on the top floor.

"There have been no arrests at this stage". I opened the window and I asked her 'Can I help you, can I call the police for you?'
