Working on a fairly small sample size, Burkhead averaged 4.6 yards per carry on 74 attempts for 344 yards with two touchdowns as a bruiser and added 17 catches for 145 yards through the air. As of now, the Patriots have Dion Lewis, James White, DJ Foster and Burkhead on the 2017 running back depth chart.

Burkhead is expected to be used primarily on special teams for the Patriots and could be a replacement for Brandon Bolden, who is an unrestricted free agent.

Hill didn't play in Week 17 against Baltimore because of a knee injury, and the Bengals gave Burkhead a start.

Burkhead made the most of that opportunity and ran for 119 yards and two scores on 27 carries. In 2015, he was a Fantasy standout before suffering a torn ACL in Week 9.

The Bengals also had concerns about Burkhead's durability as a lead running back, a role now occupied by Hill, who had injury problems of his own last season with a shoulder/chest issue and a knee ailment.

The Pats may still want to add a bigger running back - either Blount or a player via the draft.

Burkhead has lined up as a slot receiver and kick returner. It'll be interesting to see how Burkhead fits into that mix. Burkhead helped out in the passing game like Bernard. It's frustrating and confusing, but the Patriots are loaded with talent, including their backfield.

Beforehand, the former Wildcat has been tending to his National Football League free agency and is headed for the northeast after signing with the New England Patriots.
