After their split, Scarlett Johansson is now filing for a divorce

Scarlett Johansson has filed for divorce from her husband of two years Romain Dauriac.

ET talked to Hal Mayerson, Dauriac's divorce attorney, on Wednesday, who said that negotiations were ongoing between his client and Johansson before the 32-year-old actress chose to file court papers on March 7.

It was initially reported that both Scarlett and Romain are fighting over custody of their daughter, with Romain wanting to leave America and return to his home town in France with Rose in tow. Now the filing has made the separation official, and the divorce could get ugly over custody of the couple's three-year-old daughter Rose Dorothy.

"Romain's attorney, Harold Mayerson, previously said: "[Romain] would like to move to France with his daughter and Ms. Johansson does a lot of traveling.

As we reported, the 32-year-old filed for divorce from her husband of just over two years on Tuesday, and has since requested privacy during this hard transition for her family.

Scarlett Johansson arrives with her husband Romain Dauriac at Milk Studios in Los Angeles on February 20. "Thank you", Johansson said in a statement via her rep just hours before Dauriac's response. She said the marriage was "irretrievably broken" and sought joint custody of their daughter Rose but is said to be keen for the child to live with her.

Johansson's case brings back memories of Gossip Girl's Kelly Rutherford's custody battle, in which she had to see her two kids move to Europe to be with their German citizen father.

Added Mayerson, "It's not in her daughter's interest to file in the public court system". Later that month, they happily posed for photos together when they attended a reception at the Simon Lee Gallery in New York City.

This is the second marriage for Captain America: Civil War (2016) star Johansson, who was married to Deadpool (2016) actor Ryan Reynolds from 2008 to 2011.

The divorce filing comes after Scarlett told Playboy that she doesn't believe marriage and monogamy are natural.
