Inexperienced Southgate given 1st shot at vacant England job

In a press conference before United's game against Zorya Luhansk in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday at Old Trafford, Mourinho expressed his sympathy for Allardyce, who had just overseen one game in charge of England, a 1-0 win over Slovakia in Trnava on September 4.

Allardyce went overseas on Wednesday, visibly devastated he had engineered the downfall of his long-held dream to manage England after only 67 days.

Ferdinand added on BT Sport: "I think the rest of the football community around the world will just be laughing at us".

Indeed, Sam Allardyce was relieved of his duties on Tuesday evening, apparently by mutual consent, after being caught on camera discussing how to get past Federation Internationale de Football Association transfer laws, amongst a bunch of other equally dodgy topics, with undercover journalists posing as Far Eastern businessmen.

He added: "I am off overseas just to chill out and to reflect and I'd like to wish all the England lads, Gareth and the staff all the very best". "We have to be seen to apply those rules consistently and evenly".

His reign in what he gleefully described as his "dream" was the shortest of any full-time England manager.

It has also reported that Cardiff launched an investigation after auditors discovered unexplained payments relating to the 2014 loan move of Ravel Morrison from West Ham, then managed by Allardyce.

In the footage, Allardyce allegedly told two men purporting to be from a Far East investment firm how they might "get around" FA regulations concerning the transfers of players under third-party ownership.

Allardyce met with FA bosses, including chairman Greg Clarke, on Tuesday to explain and apologise for the affair.

"As part of today's meeting, I was asked to clarify what I said and the context in which the conversations took place". I have co-operated fully in this regard.

Allardyce also wished "all the very best" to England Under-21s manager Gareth Southgate, who will take charge of the national side for the next four games, as well as the players and staff.

After addressing the media outside his detached property, Allardyce and his wife, Lynn, were driven away with suitcases packed for their break overseas.
