No Zika Cases Reported During and After Olympics

According to a new study published yesterday in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, many countries across Africa and Asia-Pacific may be vulnerable to Zika virus outbreaks, with India, China, the Philippines, Indonesia, Nigeria, Vietnam, Pakistan, and Bangladesh expected to be at greatest risk of transmission.

Meanwhile, in the same press briefing, DOH Assistant Secretary and Spokesperson Dr. Eric Tayag said they will send a team to Iloilo City on Tuesday morning to monitor further the sixth Zika virus case reported in the country.

The agency said that as of Sep 4, 63 breeding habitats - comprising 37 in homes and 26 in common areas or other premises - have been detected and destroyed.

As of Sunday night-one week after the country received its first alert of a local Zika transmission, triggering widespread panic and fumigations in affected neighborhoods-Singapore's total number of cases had surged to 242, according to local newspaper The Straits Times.

In adults, Zika infections have also been linked to a rare neurological syndrome known as Guillain-Barre, as well as other neurological disorders.

There might also be a potential new cluster of infections in the Joo Seng Road area, where two cases have been confirmed, the government agencies said.

The first internationally-transmitted case reported on May 13 involved a man who came from a trip to Sao Paolo, Brazil.

Singapore's high population density, coupled by year-round humid weather conditions, makes it an ideal place for Zika-infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes to thrive.

"We are reviewing the practice of isolating Zika-positive patients who are actually clinically well and do not need to be hospitalised".

"It's also a call to the broader worldwide community to say that assistance is need to address Zika as a global epidemic", he said.

The DOH has coordinated with the local officials to intensify mosquito control efforts including targeted fogging.

Experts were anxious that people would visit Brazil for the Rio Olympics and spread the Zika virus.
