Keanu Neal, however, is going to miss some regular season time, which complicates the roster picture for Atlanta.

Neal hurt his knee in the first quarter of the Falcons' 17-6 preseason loss to the Miami Dolphins.

Coach Dan Quinn said Saturday that backup Kemal Ishmael would fill in for Neal as the starting strong safety even if the team signs Goldson, 31. The Falcons put the timetable at 3-4 weeks, adding Neal will soon undergo a "minor procedure".

He also missed the first preseason game against Washington with a "trunk" injury.

"I like the physicality", Quinn said of Goldson.

"Goldson looked good; he moved around well", general manager Thomas Dimitroff said. Quinn said he was awaiting more information on rookie WR Devin Fuller's shoulder injury. "I'll be honest with you.I'm really encouraged this is going to be a shorter-term thing and not a longer-term thing".

Julio Jones, Justin Hardy, Adrian Clayborn will all be limited in practice next week after getting injured Thursday.

Their choices are Damian Parms, who got significant run Thursday night and played solidly enough, or Sharrod Neasman, who I liked as a UDFA but has been relatively quiet thus far.

The Falcons released wide receiver David Glidden, cornerback Jordan Sefron, guard Jordan Walsh, defensive end Efe Obada and fullback Will Ratelle on Friday.

Renfree, a seventh-round pick in 2014, played in two games last season.

"It's always a hard day, and there are certain guys that you just have so much respect for", Quinn said.

"That would have been a real blow for his development and our team".
