Washington Monument closed again after elevator gets stuck

U.S. Park Police said about 50 to 60 visitors and workers were inside the monument when the elevator became stuck Saturday night.

Dozens of visitors who were at the top had to walk down the stairs, officials said.

A spokesperson for the park police told News4 that the elevator got stuck about 9:30 p.m. and about 25 to 30 people had to walk down the steps. Crews are working to get the three workers out of the elevator.

He said 73 visitors were being escorted down the interior stairway.

Sgt. Anna Rose has confirmed that, at this time, there are no injuries to report.

The park service says that was caused by computer issues associated with the elevator's control system.
