Costa Rica health officials report serious Zika outbreak in Jacó

All of the confirmed cases got the disease while traveling overseas to Zika-infected areas.

The Zika virus is particularly troubling due to the potential birth defects it is known to cause, including babies born with neurological defects and abnormally small heads.

USA health officials say urine testing is more likely than blood testing to detect Zika virus infection in many patients.

The White House and Democrats are pressuring congressional Republicans to act on President Barack Obama's demands for money to combat Zika, but even the onset of mosquito season that probably will spread the virus has failed to create a sense of urgency. This neighborhood is clear for now, but soon more rain will come.Fighting mosquitoes has always been a priority in the Florida Keys.

In 2013, the Asian lineage of Zika reached Brazil and subsequently other countries in South and Central America.

Officials detected the virus in urine as early as the first day of illness and as late as 20 days after.

"I knew it (Zika virus) was around and I was thinking it was Zika and of course I was thinking that". Pregnant women have the most to worry about: if a mother gets infected, the fetus could become malformed.

Aedes Aegypti, the mosquito that transmits the virus is endemic almost all over the world and only Canada and Chile are free from this insect vector.

Zika virus infection is largely asymptomatic but fever, rash, joint pain, and red eyes are likely.

There is no specific treatment for the virus and there is now no vaccine to protect against infection.

The CDC also backs up this claim, noting that attempts to culture the virus found in an infected mother's breast milk have been unsuccessful. "No one wants to go through that when they are pregnant and have a baby that might possibly come out deformed", Mujica said.

Study authors ran tests on multiple kinds of samples to figure out "the most sensitive and efficient testing algorithm for acute Zika virus disease", Dr. Andrea Bingham, vector-borne disease surveillance coordinator at the Florida Department of Health, and her colleagues wrote in the report.

Wear long-sleeves and trousers or permethrin-treated clothes.

In February the first case of sexual transmission of the virus was confirmed by Texas, USA, health officials.

Fearful they might bear children who suffer from brain-damaging birth defects caused by Zika, more women are expected to look for ways to prevent or end pregnancies. "So, it would be possible for someone to fly in from a Caribbean vacation with Zika, get off the plane in Louisville, get bit by a mosquito and one case".
