Canelo Alvarez KO of Amir Khan; Career over for British boxer?

It's no surprise that Canelo Alvarez knocked out Amir Khan to retain his WBC and Ring Magazine middleweight titles on Saturday night, but the knockout itself was a real stunner, a KO of the Year contender in a year that has already had quite a few.

It all led to the crushing closer, when 25-year-old Alvarez again showed the brute strength that has now carried him to a record of 47-1-1 (33 knockouts).

The back of Khan's head bounced off the canvas, prompting his seconds to rush to his aid as he lay motionless for a couple of minutes.

Khan's decision to move up two divisions to middleweight was a courageous one but evidently a step too far, with the Bolton-born fighter having to now regroup and reconsider his options.

"I'm a natural 147 (pounds) fighter", Khan told host American broadcasters HBO after he had recovered, having spent a worryingly long time on his back before returning to his feet.

"I want to be the best, and to be the best I have to fight the best". "I want to be the best, and to be the best I have to fight the best".

Not many fans gave Khan the chance to win over Alvarez whose only career loss was against unbeaten former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather, Jr. Amir has set the tone.

"He's got to stop hiding behind the flag and fight the fight that we all want to see", Hunter said of Alvarez.

"I've got the Garcia fight there, I'm still (in) the mandatory position with the WBC, that's a big fight for me. But I knew time would come to my favor, and you saw that", Canelo said. I don't fear anyone.

"I didn't make it to the end, but I tried my best", said Amir "King" Khan.

The Canelo right back hand that felled Khan flat on his back and out before he hit the ground, was a peach of a punch and wasn't expected. "He's very fast. So I knew it would be complicated at the beginning", Alvarez said.

"Many people focus on my power and talk to my power, but I have many more qualities in the ring".

After winning the bout, Canelo invited GGG Gennady Golovkin into the ring. "Golovkin, make sure you answer your phone tomorrow morning", De La Hoya said.
