Sadiq Khan elected as 1st Muslim Mayor of London

Sadiq Khan, the son of a bus driver, became London's first Muslim mayor on Saturday, seeing off a Conservative challenger who attempted to link him to extremism and securing a much-needed win for his opposition Labour Party.

The Conservatives had made attempts to link him to extremism during campaign.Khan, the son of a Pakistani bus driver, beat Conservative Zac Goldsmith with 57% votes - the largest mandate for any British politician in history - marking the return of Labour rule to the United Kingdom capital after 8 years.

Sadiq Khan, the new Labour Mayor of London, chose Southwark Cathedral as the setting for a ceremony where he signed the formal declaration of acceptance of office.

Mr Khan beat Mr Goldsmith, by 1,310,143 votes to 994,614 - a margin of victory of 13.6%, giving him a larger personal mandate than either of his predecessors, Boris Johnson and Ken Livingstone.

Khan broke the eight-year hold of the Conservatives on City Hall and succeeds the charismatic Boris Johnson in a prestigious post that has responsibility for transport, housing, policing and promoting economic development.

He told those assembled: "I'm determined to lead the most transparent, engaged and accessible administration London has ever seen, and to represent every single community, and every single part of our city". I am so proud london has chosen hope over fear and unity over division.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo added on Twitter that Khan's "humanity, progressivism will benefit Londoners".

"Thanks to the time, money and support you gave, we were able to overcome a desperate and nasty Tory campaign. Fear does not make us safer, it only makes us weaker and the politics of fear is simply not welcome in our city".

The victory was hailed in Tooting, a multi-ethnic area of south London where Khan lives and where he grew up in social housing, before becoming first a human rights lawyer and then a member of parliament. I voted for him as I am looking for a return to centrism.

His success is a boost for Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, a veteran socialist who has been battling a row over anti-Semitism and growing criticism from the moderate wing of his party since his election in September.

Bilawal tweeted, "Congratulations @SadiqKhan for being elected mayor of London". A prominent figure in former Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown's Cabinet, he resigned from the shadow Cabinet a year ago to launch his campaign to replace Boris Johnson - whose second and final term ended on Friday.

Oxford-educated Goldsmith, the son of late billionaire Sir James Goldsmith and brother of Jemima Khan, trailed through most of the mayoral campaign - attributed by some to his camp's failed attempts to link Khan with extremist personalities.

The impact of the crisis was hard to gauge in the election of more than 2,700 local officials and new devolved authorities in Scotland and Wales.
